Goodbye, Our Hero

Truly a hero.

A 21 year old Indonesian air traffic controller is called a hero when he succesfully help the last flight to take off when an earthquake start to struck.

Anthonius Gunawan Agung keep staying on his position despite the earthquake that sway the Air Traffic Control Tower at Mutiara Sis Al Jufri Airport. The earthquake that occurs on Friday with 7.5 magnitude shake the coastal city of Palu on the island of Sulawesi.

Agung had just given his permission for Batik Air flight to depart a few minutes early right before the incident occur which is 6.02 p.m local time. According to Australia’a ABC News report, Agung remained to see the flight take off while the other employess ran to save themselves from the shaking tower.

The pilot of Batik Air, Icoze Ezoci, post on his Instagram page Agung’s last transmission which said “‘Batik 6231 runway 33 clear for take off.'”.He replied by saying “Thank you for keeping me and guarding me till I’m safely airborne.” He also said that Agng was his ‘guardian angel’.

As soon as the flight safely depart, Agung jumped from the four-storey tower as it started to collapse. He was taken to a hospital where the doctors found that Agung had broke his leg and serious internal injuries. Before a helicopter could arrive to take him to a large hospital, Agung had passed away.

Agung’s body was flown to Makassar in South Sulawesi for burial and AirNav Indonesia, the country’s air traffic control service, said Agung has been posthumously promoted two levels.
